Its no secret that many women have a special affinity for shoes, and lots of them.
Somervilles Powderhouse Productions hopes to channel that passion into its new Shoetube.tv.
The online video channel and social community for women who love shoes launches today with professionally produced and user-generated videos, blogs and forums all dedicated to what one woman caught on tape describes as jewelry for the feet.
Powderhouse got its inspiration from Medford resident Melissa OSheas Hello Stiletto Shoe Club, a free social club that hosts events where shoe fanatics can show off their favorite pairs.
Shoetube is an opportunity for the award-winning TV production company, whose programs have aired on the Discovery Channel, PBS and TLC, to tackle its first new media project and bring its storytelling skills to the Web, according to creative director Bill Lattanzi, Shoetubes editor.
Its a great time for production companies right now because its like a new year on the Web, where video channels seem to have a chance to make it on their own without a cable network, he said.
Shoetube has 70 bloggers and production teams and hosts in Boston, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Denver contributing content.
One blog serves as a countdown to Sex In the City: The Movie due in theaters in May. The TV series fashion-plate characters are known for their love of high-end heels from the likes of Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo. Sex In the City for our community is like the Beatles coming to America, Lattanzi said. Its the most eagerly awaited movie in the shoe industry.
Shoetubes six regular video features include Behind the Boot, which looks at the shoe world through the eyes of designers, fashionistas and celebrities. Real or Deal tests viewers knowledge of knock-offs vs. designer shoes. In Walk On By, hosts accost women on the street about where they bought their shoes.
OShea already is a fan.
I think its fantastic, she said. There doesnt seem to be anything else like it that exists.
Shoetube plans to make its money through advertising. Companies can set up microsite boutiques with their own content and links for shoe purchases.
